Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook is the first commercial model of Chromebook. According to Google and Acer, the Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook will sell for $349. If you plan to buy this or any Chromebook then it is very important that you understand that a Chromebook is not the complete replacement for your PC or Mac. If you use software like Photoshop, then you will still need you PC or Mac.
Five month ago Google gave free Chromebooks to people for testing it. Though the Chromebooks given to the testers were not Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook, but they were much like this device. Some of the pros and cons marked by the test pilots are the listed here.
Some of the major pros of the Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook are:
1. It is very light weight and easy to carry.
2. As compared to other laptops and battery powered computer, the Acer Wi-Fi has a very long battery life.
3. The Chromebook boots within 10 seconds.
4. If you like "Angry Birds" then you would like to buy this Chromebook. They have added a web app that lets you play the Angry Birds.
5. There is an added level of web security for the users.
6. All files are linked to the cloud and there is no data on the device itself, so the users do not have to worry about their files in case they lose or damage their Chromebook.
7. Whenever you turn on the Chromebook, it is automatically refreshed to the latest features and fixes.
8. HDMI output is a nice effect for those who like watching movies.
9. Supports music streaming from Amazon Cloud service, Pandora, etc.
Some of the cons are:
1. A Chromebook can only run Chrome OS. It means that you cannot load Windows on Mac based programs. For a lot of people who use Mac and PC, this is a major drawback as they would have to keep their Mac or PC even if they buy a Chromebook.
2. Since the Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook is not a complete replacement for your previous computer, the cost might seem a bit high.
3. This Chromebook does not have any optical drive, which means that you cannot play DVDs or CDs on it. The only alternative is to use the USB port or the SD card slot.
From a very objective point of view, the pros for Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook outweigh the cons. The Chromebook may not be a replacement for Computer, but it is a great substitute for it.
