First off laptops in 2011 are going to be coming way down in price. Why? The competition is fierce. What once was a monopoly on the market by two or three big producers is now flooded with brands. This competition drives the price way down.

If you are buying a laptop in 2011 there are a few things that you should definitely not do. By now most people realize that technology gets old fast. That means the top of the line laptop that someone purchased last year for two thousand dollars is now worth about five hundred dollars.
This means that you should not go out and spend a fortune on the latest and greatest but instead find something mid range that maybe has some of the newer bells and whistles but not so many that it jacks the price up.
Try to stay away from beta models too many bugs to work out. Don't buy more than you need. In other words if you use your laptop for business applications than you do not need a gaming laptop. Try to keep in mind what you use the laptop for realistically than purchase one that will fit those needs.
